Protest works – Rogers caves – kinda

Rogers Canada has released a press statement announcing a last minute new data plan for the iPhone 3G.

“Effective July 11, and as a limited time promotional offer for customers who activate by August 31 on a three year contract, a data-only offering of 6GB of data for $30 per month is being made available that can be added to any in-market voice plan. For example, with 6GB of data, iPhone 3G users can visit 35,952 web pages, or send and receive 157,286 emails, or watch 6,292 minutes of YouTube videos each and every month.”

Runinediphone, whom today has gathered 58,000+ signatures to pressure Rogers, has responded with a thanks – no thanks. They are glad that Rogers has responded, but issued these points which they are still not happy.

Thank-You Rogers for helping out. We still need more help. We need your offer to be:

1. Unlimited Data Plan
2. Not a limited time offer
3. Competitive rates on your voice plans

So it seems that public pressure can have some effect. Personally, apart from the prices of the plans, for me it’s the lack of any decent data component in the Vodafone plans which will cripple my iPhone – reducing it to a very pretty and stunningly functional but too expensive to run toy – that or re-mortgage the house and send the kids to school in last years uniforms again.

If Vodafone think’s 250mb of data is a plan, they are taking the piss beyond belief. 250mb of data could and should be gobbled up in one decent lunch time coffee session, not expected to hold out for a whole month, and 1Gb seriously would and should last a decent browser a day or two. I deal with large photoshop files that are almost always up around 150+Mb. I only need to send one or two of those babies off and zip there goes my data allocation.

Come on Vodafone, get serious about the data, and we might get serious about the money and your toys.
